Quick:

Why grams to cups depends on the ingredient

A gram measures weight, while a cup measures volume. That means there is no single number that turns grams into cups for everything. A cup of fluffy flour weighs about 125 g, a cup of sugar about 200 g, and a cup of honey a hefty 340 g. Our converter uses a separate density for every ingredient, so 200 grams of flour and 200 grams of sugar give you two very different, and correct, answers.

All results use the standard US customary cup (236.6 ml). Dry ingredients like flour and cocoa assume the spoon-and-level method: spoon the ingredient into the cup, then sweep the top flat with a knife. Brown sugar is measured packed, the way most recipes expect.

How to convert grams to cups

  1. Enter the amount in grams from your recipe.
  2. Choose the ingredient you are measuring from the list or tap a quick chip.
  3. Read the cups result, shown as a kitchen-friendly fraction like 1 ⅔ cups, along with tablespoons and ml.
cups = grams ÷ grams per cup of the ingredient
Example: 250 g flour ÷ 125 g per cup = 2 cups

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in 1 cup?

It depends on the ingredient. One US cup holds about 125 g of all-purpose flour, 200 g of granulated sugar, 227 g of butter, 237 g of water and 340 g of honey.

How many cups is 100 grams?

100 g of all-purpose flour is about ¾ cup (0.8 cups), 100 g of granulated sugar is ½ cup, and 100 g of butter is a little less than ½ cup (0.44 cups).

Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?

Not exactly. A US cup is 236.6 ml, while the metric cup used in Australia, Canada and the UK is 250 ml. This converter uses the US cup, which most American recipes are written for.

Why is my cup of flour heavier than the chart?

Scooping the cup straight into the flour bag packs it down and can add 20–30 g per cup. Spoon the flour into the cup and level it off for results that match standard recipes.
